TOPEKA—The 12th Judicial District Nominating Commission is seeking nominees to fill a district magistrate judge vacancy sitting in Jewell County, although the incumbent may be given assignments anywhere in the district.     

The 12th judicial district includes Cloud, Jewell, Lincoln, Mitchell, Republic and Washington counties.     

Justice Caleb Stegall, the Supreme Court departmental justice responsible for the 12th judicial district, said nominees may apply or be recommended, but recommendations must come on a nomination form and include the nominee’s signature. 

A district magistrate judge must be:  

  • a graduate of a high school or secondary school or the equivalent;

  • a resident of Jewell County at the time of taking the oath of office and maintain Jewell County residency while holding such office; and

  • either a lawyer admitted to practice law in Kansas or pass a certification examination given by the Supreme Court within 18 months, as provided by K.S.A. 20-334(b) and K.S.A. 20-337. 

The commission welcomes nominations to fill the position, but each nominations must be accompanied by a nomination form, completed and signed by the nominee. 

Nomination forms are available from the clerk’s office in each of the district’s courts in Cloud, Jewell, Lincoln, Mitchell, Republic or Washington counties. The form is also available from the clerk of the appellate courts at the Kansas Judicial Center in Topeka and on the Kansas judicial branch website.     

Completed forms, with supporting documents and an authorization of release, must be delivered by noon Friday, May 26, 2017, to:

The nominating commission will interview candidates and select the district magistrate judge Friday, June 16, 2017. Commission meetings are open to the public.
