District Judge Kevin MoriartyTOPEKA—District Judge Kevin Moriarty will retire June 28 after serving more than 15 years in the 10th Judicial District.

Moriarty was appointed a district judge in 2004 and served four years as chief judge of the 10th Judicial District, which is composed of Johnson County.

"It has been my honor and privilege to serve the residents of Johnson County," Moriarty said. "I can vividly remember the excitement and pride I felt on the day I was sworn in as a district court judge on April 23, 2004. I still feel exactly the same today as I did all those years ago when I enter the courthouse."

Moriarty earned a bachelor's degree from Washburn University and a law degree from Washburn's School of Law. He also completed a master's degree in public administration from the University of Kansas.

He served as Johnson County district attorney from 1979 to 1984 and then was in private practice for 20 years before becoming a judge.

Moriarty has served on the Kansas Judicial Council advisory committee since 2009 and has been a member of the Johnson County Judicial Nominating Commission since 2008.

He was a trustee of the Johnson County Bar Foundation and was president of the Earl E. O'Connor Inn of Court, which seeks to foster professional excellence in the legal profession in Johnson and Wyandotte counties.

In his community, he has served on the boards of Johnson County Mental Health, EmberHope, and Allies for Racial Justice.

Moriarty is married to retired State Sen. Barbara Allen. Moriarty has five children: Shannon, Kelly, Erin, Maddox, and Maverick.

After retiring as a judge, Moriarty plans to work as a full-time mediator.

"It has been a complete joy to work with the dedicated employees of the Kansas judiciary," he said. "Without these employees, our justice system would fail."
