TOPEKA—The Kansas Supreme Court appointed Ann Adrian of Newton and District Judge Teresa Watson of Topeka and reappointed Carrie Allton of Lawrence to three-year terms on the Client Protection Fund Commission.

Their terms begin July 1 and end June 30, 2022.

The Lawyers Fund for Client Protection, which the board oversees, compensates people who suffer economic loss as a result of dishonest actions by Kansas lawyers. The fund is financed by annual registration fees paid by lawyer to practice law in the state.

Out of about 11,100 lawyers actively licensed to practice in the state, about 20 lawyers each year have been subject to claims made to the client protection fund.

The commission is composed of one judge, four actively practicing lawyers, and two nonlawyers.

Adrian, a nonlawyer, succeeds Doug Anstaett of Topeka.

Watson serves in the 3rd Judicial District, which is composed of Shawnee County. She succeeds District Judge Michael Ward of El Dorado. He serves in the 13th Judicial District, which is composed of Butler, Elk, and Greenwood counties.

Allton is a lawyer member and vice chair of the commission.

Other members are Thomas Hammond II, lawyer, Overland Park, who is chair of the commission; Beth Love, nonlawyer, Dodge City; Christopher Sook, lawyer, Hays; and David Trevino, lawyer, Lawrence.

Douglas Shima, clerk of the appellate courts, serves as secretary of the commission.
