Chief Judge Oliver Kent LynchTOPEKA — Chief Justice Lawton R. Nuss announced today the Supreme Court has appointed Judge Oliver Kent Lynch to complete the remainder of a vacant term of chief judge in the 11th Judicial District and to serve a full two-year term beginning next year.

His appointment begins December 19, and the two-year term is effective January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2019.

Lynch has served as a district judge in the 11th Judicial District since 2005. He presides over cases in Cherokee, Crawford, and Labette counties.

"We are glad that Judge Lynch agreed to serve as chief judge, providing continuity in capable leadership in the 11th Judicial District," said Nuss.

"I am honored at the Supreme Court’s confidence in me. I look forward to working more closely with our wonderful staff," Lynch said.

Lynch succeeds Judge A.J. Wachter as chief judge in the 11th Judicial District. Wachter is retiring in December.

Lynch is a native of Baxter Springs and graduated from the University of Kansas and the KU School of Law. Before his appointment to the bench, Lynch was in private practice. He also previously served as Baxter Springs city attorney and Cherokee County attorney.

Each of Kansas' 31 judicial districts has a chief judge who, in addition to his or her judicial responsibilities, has general control over case assignments within the district, as well as general supervisory authority over the administrative and clerical functions of the court.
