TOPEKA—The 12th Judicial District Nominating Commission will convene June 16 in the Jewell County District Court courthouse to interview candidates to fill a district magistrate judge position in Jewell County.

The courthouse is located at 307 N Commercial in Mankato. Interviews are open to the public and they will begin at a time to be announced.

The 12th Judicial District is composed of Cloud, Jewell, Lincoln, Mitchell, Republic, and Washington counties.

The person selected will sit in Mankato in Jewell County.

Candidates for the vacancy are:

  • Kevin L. Phillips of Mankato, who is a lawyer in private practice

  • Kay M. Prather of Randall, who is a lawyer in private practice

A district magistrate judge must be:

  • a graduate of a high school or secondary school or the equivalent;

  • a resident of Jewell County at the time of taking the oath of office and maintain Jewell County residency while holding such office; and

  • a lawyer admitted to practice law in Kansas, or pass a certification examination given by the Supreme Court within 18 months, as provided by K.S.A. 20-334(b) and K.S.A. 20-337.

The 12th Judicial District Nominating Commission consists of Justice Caleb Stegall as the nonvoting chair; Dana E. Brewer and J. Bradley Lowell of Concordia; Carol K. Good of Barnard; Jerry L. Harrison and Dwight L. Daniels of Beloit; Daniel D. Metz of Lincoln; Tanner M. Johnson of Courtland; Darrell E. Miller and Rick Diamond of Mankato; Douglas G. Simms of Belleville; Regine L. Thompson of Scandia; and Bruce E. Meyer of Palmer.
