TOPEKA—The 10th Judicial District Nominating Commission selected six attorneys to interivew to fill a district magistrate judge vacancy in Johnson County created by the May 2017 retirement of Judge Michael H. Farley.  

The attorneys selected are: 

  • Jenifer Ashford 

  • Christopher Kopecky 

  • Alex McCauley 

  • Wayne Smith 

  • Jessica Sokoloff 

  • Michael Tamburini 

The commission will convene at 8 a.m. Monday, May 8, 2017, in room 202/204 of the Johnson County Administration Building, 111 South Cherry Street, Olathe. Interviews will start at 9:30 a.m. and are open to the public.  

The 10th Judicial District Nominating Commission welcomes and encourages public input into this important process. The commission has set aside time for public comment beginning at 9:15 a.m. on the day and in the location the interviews take place.

Written comments will be forwarded to all members of the commission. 

To be eligible for a district magistrate position, the candidate must have graduated from a high school, or the equivalent; be a resident of Johnson County at the time of taking office and while serving; and either be a lawyer admitted to practice in Kansas or pass an examination given by the Supreme Court and become certified within 18 months. 

The 10th Judicial District Judicial Nominating Commission has 14 members. Seven are attorneys elected by Kansas licensed attorneys residing in the district, and seven are nonlawyers appointed by the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners. 

The 10th Judicial District Nominating Commission consists of Justice Lee A. Johnson as the nonvoting chair; lawyer members Stephen M. Howe (commission secretary), Judge Kevin P. Moriarty, J. Brett Milbourn, John M. Parisi, Greg L. Musil, Thomas J. Bath Jr., and Rick G. Guinn; and nonlawyer members Annabeth Surbaugh; Gregory M. Doring; Vivien Jennings; Doug D. Brownlee; James A.C. Griffith; Joe W. Beveridge; and Samuel H. Turner Sr.
