Hon Anthony J. Powell

Anthony J. Powell was born on January 5, 1962, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the George Washington University, Washington, D.C., in 1985, and a juris doctorate, with honors, from the Washburn University School of Law in 1991. While in law school, he served as an associate editor of the Washburn Law Journal, and as a member of the Moot Court Board.

On January 11, 2013, Governor Sam Brownback appointed Judge Powell to the seat on the Kansas Court of Appeals formerly held by the late Chief Judge Richard Greene. Prior to his appointment to the Court of Appeals, Judge Powell served as a Sedgwick County district judge for 10 years. Judge Powell was first elected to the district court bench in 2002, and was unopposed for reelection in 2006 and 2010. During his tenure, Judge Powell worked in nearly every department, including the family law department, where he served a term as its presiding judge. Judge Powell presided over hundreds of trials, and received high marks from the members the bar in the Wichita Eagle's judicial performance surveys over the years.

Judge Powell formerly served as a member of the Executive Board of the Kansas District Judges' Association, and was Co-Chair of its Legislative Committee. Judge Powell also served on the End of Life Issues Committee of the Judicial Council, and on the Kansas Supreme Court's Committee on High Conflict Divorce.

Prior to Judge Powell's election to the bench, he served eight years as a member of the Kansas House of Representatives where he served as Majority Whip, and as chairman of several committees, including Federal and State Affairs, Ethics and Elections, and the Joint Committee on State-Tribal Relations. He also served has Vice-Chairman of the Taxation Committee.

Upon his admission to the practice of law in 1991, Judge Powell joined the law firm of Martin and Churchill, Chartered, where his practice emphasized business and employment law. Judge Powell also served as Legislative Director to U.S. Congressman William Broomfield and as an intern on the staff of U.S. Senator Bob Dole.

Judge Powell and his wife, Betty, have been married for over 25 years and they have four children. Judge Powell is a member of Central Christian Church, Wichita, Kansas.
