How to Act in Court

Courts are places of tradition, civility, and good manners. When you appear in court, act and speak in ways that help your case.

  • Be on time. If you are late, your case could be rescheduled or dismissed. In some cases, a warrant could be issued for your arrest.
  • Wear clothing suitable for court, and make sure it's neat and clean. Men should wear long pants and a shirt with sleeves. Women should wear a dress, skirt, or long pants with a blouse, sweater, or casual top with sleeves.
  • Do not bring your children into court, unless their presence is required or allowed by the judge.
  • Do not chew gum, eat, or drink while in the courtroom.
  • Be respectful to everyone. This includes the judge, court staff, other parties in your case, witnesses, court bailiff, and anyone else in the area.
  • Address the judge as "Your Honor."
  • Do not curse, yell, or argue with answers given in court by the judge, opposing party, or attorney. You will have your turn to speak.
  • Turn off your cellphone and other electronic devices.
